Drake rose at dawn. Archer was on guard duty, standing by the river and looking up and down it. âWhy donât you rest for another hour? Iâll attempt to catch us a fish for breakfast,â Drake said.
âI heard some fish splashing so you might get one.â Archer went back to the tree that was their base camp and wrapped his cloak around himself. Drake took his tunic off and held it just above the sandy dirt of the river bed. He waited until his arms were aching and his feet were numb with cold, but finally two unwary fish paused to nibble at his tunic.
He flipped it into the air and onto the grass beside the river, scattering drops of water over himself as he did, but the fish were flopping on the grass, successfully caught.
He left them there while he scouted the area, aware of the long time heâd been standing in the water, but there was no sign of anyone moving on the road, or the nearby fields. He made a small fire and skewered both fish over it, then wrung out his tunic, leaving it spread over a bush in the sun to dry while he replaced his boots, turned the fish, and checked the surroundings again. The later it got in the day the more likely there would be other people nearby.
Archer woke up just as Drake pulled the fish from the fire and rested them on a rock to cool. They both drank their fill of water and refilled the water skin, then led the horses to drink while they ate. He threw dirt over the fire and rolled the rocks heâd used for cooking into the river to hide the fact theyâd camped in this place, then pulled his still damp tunic on, and finally his chain mail. Archer was already dressed and ready to leave.
They waited under the trees until they were certain they were alone and then resumed their journey. Drake enjoyed riding through the land with his lover, talking from time to time, always alert for danger, but still pleased to be alone with Archer. Because theyâd eaten well for breakfast and still had plenty of food from Lord Garrickâs home, they only rested long enough to refresh the horses at midday, and then continued their journey.
Theyâd made good time, much better than with the wagon on the first trip, and with the captive men on the second. Their destriers were war horses, used to covering long distances uncomplainingly. Already theyâd reached the area that seemed to signify the border between the nearest lordâs property and Bancroftâs. It was land that was cared for, but not nearly as well as farther south, yet not as neglected as the lands Bancroft had claimed.
They were riding side by side in the middle of the narrow road, but constantly turning in the saddle to check before and behind themselves as well as to both sides.
Archer said, âYou were going to tell me how and why you became a swordsman.
